Background of the Study

Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) analysis is a powerful financial tool used to assess the impact of different levels of production on an organization's profitability. CVP analysis helps businesses understand the relationship between fixed and variable costs, sales volume, and profit margins. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Misau Local Government Area (LGA), applying CVP analysis can provide valuable insights for making pricing, production, and financial decisions. However, many SMEs face challenges in utilizing CVP analysis due to limited resources, financial knowledge, and complex cost structures (Horngren et al., 2012).

This study aims to investigate the difficulties encountered by SMEs in Misau LGA when applying CVP analysis. By exploring the factors that hinder effective implementation, the study will provide recommendations for overcoming these barriers and improving the use of CVP analysis in decision-making.

Statement of the Problem

SMEs in Misau LGA struggle with applying CVP analysis effectively due to challenges such as inadequate financial literacy, lack of proper data collection systems, and limited access to cost accounting tools. These challenges affect their ability to make informed financial decisions. This study examines the barriers to applying CVP analysis in SMEs in Misau LGA.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to identify the challenges SMEs in Misau LGA face when applying Cost-Volume-Profit analysis.

The objectives are:

1. To explore the challenges faced by SMEs in Misau LGA in applying CVP analysis.

2. To assess the factors that contribute to the difficulties in using CVP analysis in SMEs.

3. To propose solutions to enhance the effective application of CVP analysis in SMEs in Misau LGA.

Research Questions

1. What challenges do SMEs in Misau LGA face in applying CVP analysis?

2. What factors contribute to the difficulties in using CVP analysis in SMEs?

3. How can SMEs in Misau LGA overcome the challenges in applying CVP analysis?

Research Hypotheses

1. SMEs in Misau LGA face significant challenges in applying CVP analysis due to a lack of financial expertise.

2. The application of CVP analysis in SMEs is hindered by insufficient data collection systems and financial reporting practices.

3. SMEs in Misau LGA can improve their use of CVP analysis by addressing challenges related to training and financial resources.

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the understanding of how SMEs in Misau LGA can improve their financial decision-making by effectively applying CVP analysis. The findings will help SMEs optimize their pricing, production, and cost management strategies.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study is focused on SMEs in Misau LGA and examines the challenges they face in applying CVP analysis. Limitations include potential biases in responses from SME owners and the difficulty in accessing accurate financial data.
